The Chief Medical Director of Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti (FETHI), Prof. Adekunle Ajayi on Monday at this year 2020 World Diabetes Day sensitization programme within the hospital; having as a guest speaker, a retired Nurse and a seasoned administrator, Chief Mrs Monisola Oloro.
The World Diabetes Day which is being celebrated every 14th of November, was this year tagged “The Nursing Management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus” and papers were presented by the guest speaker, Nurses and a Dietitian.
Diabetes is known as a metabolic, endocrine, and non-communicable disease that is a ‘silent killer’. Increased levels of sugar in the body may lead to diabetes, and not managing it at the right time will invite serious complications.
Type 2 diabetes is a complex, long term condition that requires a great deal of self management. The Nurse has important role to play in providing information, educating the patients, supporting self management and promoting patient autonomy in areas such as diet, exercise, blood glucose monitoring and drug therapy.
