GLOBAL HANDWASHING DAY 2026: BE A HANDWASHING HERO

Handwashing is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent the spread of infections and protect lives. Observed annually on 15 October, Global Handwashing Day raises awareness about the importance of washing hands with soap and encourages everyone to make it a regular habit at home, in healthcare facilities, schools, workplaces and communities. By practising proper handwashing consistently, each person can play a part in protecting their health and that of others.

The 2026 theme, “Be a Handwashing Hero”, calls on everyone to take responsibility for preventing the spread of infections through consistent handwashing. At the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti, the observance reinforces the importance of hand hygiene in infection prevention and control and the delivery of safe, quality care. In healthcare settings, proper hand hygiene helps protect patients, healthcare workers, caregivers and visitors. Beyond the hospital, it also helps limit the spread of germs through contaminated hands, food and surfaces. Department image Making handwashing a regular practice requires more than awareness, it also depends on access to clean water, soap and appropriate facilities. Healthcare facilities, workplaces, schools and households all have a role to play in creating environments that support good hygiene. Healthcare professionals must follow recommended hand hygiene practices, while patients, caregivers and visitors are encouraged to observe the Hospital’s infection prevention guidelines. Everyone should wash their hands with soap and clean water before preparing or eating food, after using the toilet, and whenever their hands are visibly dirty.

As Global Handwashing Day 2026 is observed, everyone is encouraged to make handwashing a daily habit, not just an activity associated with a particular occasion. Whether at the bedside, in the office, at home or in the community, this simple practice can help prevent infections and protect lives. Be a Handwashing Hero! Make clean hands a daily habit and help protect lives.
