NPMCN Assesses FETHI for Community Medicine Residency Re-accreditation
The National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) has concluded an assessment of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti (FETHI), for the possible re-accreditation of its Residency Training Programme in Public Health and Community Medicine.
The two-day exercise, which began on Tuesday, 22nd September and ended on Wednesday, 23rd September, 2026, focused on the hospital's facilities, manpower, training resources and other requirements for effective postgraduate medical education.
The accreditation team, led by Prof. Anthonette Ofili, was received by the Chief Medical Director of FETHI, Prof. Kolawole Ogundipe, alongside members of the hospital's management committee and the Department of Community Medicine.
Speaking at the opening of the exercise, Prof. Ofili said the team was at the hospital to assess its readiness to continue providing quality residency training in Public Health and Community Medicine.
She said the assessment would cover staffing, training and support facilities, departmental resources, rural and urban practice areas, as well as other clinical departments where residents receive practical exposure.
"We are here to support the training and we believe you are well prepared, as we can see very senior members of the profession among departmental members here. The team would also examine the organisation of the residency programme and the department's contribution to promoting community nursing," Prof. Ofili said.
She commended the hospital for the hospitality extended to the team and expressed appreciation for the cooperation received from staff.
In his response, Prof. Ogundipe welcomed the accreditation team and appreciated the NPMCN for its continued support to the hospital. He said FETHI had continued to grow in status as a teaching institution, particularly through its expanding relationships with universities like ABUAD, Venite University, and other academic institutions.
He cited the hospital's approval as a teaching hospital for the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) as one of the recent strategic partnerships aimed at strengthening medical education and clinical trainings.
The CMD said previous accreditation exercises had provided useful recommendations which the hospital had used to improve its services and training environment. He expressed optimism that the latest exercise would similarly provide recommendations capable of further strengthening service delivery and postgraduate medical training at FETHI.
During the debriefing session on Wednesday, Prof. Ofili commended the hospital management and members of the Department of Community Medicine for their cooperation throughout the exercise. She presented an analysis highlighting the hospital's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats along with recommendations for further improvement.
Prof. Ogundipe assured the accreditation team that the management would carefully consider the observations and recommendations contained in its report.
He specifically commended the Head of the Department of Community Medicine, Prof. Olusegun Elegbede, for what he described as exemplary leadership. Furthermore, he hinted that expansion of the Community Medicine Department would also be considered as part of the hospital's future development plans.
Prof. Ogundipe commended the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) for providing a befitting facility for the welfare and comfort of its members within the hospital. He also praised doctors who had remained in Nigeria despite the increasing migration of healthcare professionals abroad, popularly known as the "Japa syndrome."
The CMD said the hospital management would continue to strengthen initiatives aimed at attracting and retaining medical professionals and reducing brain drain in the health sector.
In his vote of thanks, the Head of the Department of Community Medicine, Prof. Olusegun Elegbede, thanked the NPMCN team for the assessment and its constructive recommendations. He also appreciated members of the department for their commitment and support towards the success of the exercise.
He expressed hope that the outcome of the assessment would result in the granting of full accreditation to the department's residency training programme.
