The food demonstration by the Community Medicine department in conjunction with the Dietetics department of the hospital on Wednesday, where nursing mothers were enlightened on the importance of breastfeeding for the first six months of life and how better to prepare the infant meals.

The mothers were informed that exclusive breastfeeding helps brain development, bonding between mother and child, prevents ovarian cancer, prevents infection for the baby, development of child’s immunity, helps the uterus to return to its pre-pregnancy position and it reduces post partum heamorhage.

All the six classes of nutrients that make diet to balanced were enumerated to be carbohydrates, protein, fat & oil, minerals, vitamins and water.

Every child above 6-months was said to be introduced to family foods gradually and each meal should contain adequate diet that contains all the six classes of nutrients.

Dr F. E. Omotoye, Mrs Tomilola Adebayo, Mrs Odeyemi, Mrs Agbede and other members of the community medicine and dietetics departments were involved in the demonstration.
