The Management of Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti, in collaboration with the Department of Human Resources, has organised a one-day seminar for the Transportation Unit of the Department of Works on Wednesday, 7th September, 2022, at the Histhopathology Seminar Room (FETHI).

Giving her welcome address, the Deputy Director, Administration (Human Resources), Mrs. Folusho Adelegan, on behalf of the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Adekunle Ajayi, welcomed the participants to the seminar.

In her remarks, she stated, that the health sector is labour intensive and as such, require diverse professionals and precise application of knowledge to deliver safe and quality services.
Hence, the training was designed to enlighten the Transportation Unit (Drivers), on the appropriate public behaviourial model vis-a-vis other road users, with precautionary safety measures while undertaking official driving duties.

Architect David Adeuya, while addressing the participants during his lecture on the theme; “IMPACT OF DRIVER BEHAVIOUR IN PUBLIC” quoted, according to Ukoji (2014), that unsafe driving behaviours,
inappropriate speeding and speed related factors, lack of understanding of traffic regulations, low compliance to road signs and speed limit, anger or aggressive tendences, stress, drunk/dangerous driving and inappropriate overtaking, account for up to 90% of crashes in Nigeria and dangerous to other road users.

He thereafter, took the participants through the one-part lecture, as he explored essential safety incentives to achieve the most favorable improvements when driving in the rain.
They are; (Turning on your headlights, reducing speed, keeping both hands on the steering wheels and avoiding flooded roads to avoid hydroplaning situations).

Further in, causes of road traffic accidents( an unexpected phenomenon that occurs as a result of the operation of vehicles), were also enumerated and attributed to the underlisted factors;

• Human factors such as; (prevalent disregard of traffic signs, impatience/negligence, use of mobile phones while driving, overloading of vehicles, lack of proper training of drivers & over speeding), which constitutes over 80% of the cause of road traffic accidents recorded nationwide.
  -Mechanical factors such as; brake failure, burst tyres, use of fake spare parts, poorly maintained vehicles, defective/dazzling lights.
  -Environmental Factors, such as; Bad road, weather conditions, stray animals, road obstructions, dangerous bends and abandoned vehicles.

At the end of the lecture, questions/answers and clarifications were raised and appropriately addressed by the speaker.

Giving the vote of thanks, Mr. Adebayo Adewumi, thanked the Management of the Hospital and Human Resources Department for organising the training for them.

Also, the Logistics Officer, Mr. Oguntuase Gbenga, lauded the support of the Management for the training and urged the participants to strive better in their continued representation of professionalism in the discharge of their duties.

Concluding, Mr. Mikhail Arogundade(PHD), Head of Training Unit, commended the participants for their rapt attention, as he charged them to put to good use all they had gained from the seminar, becoming a workforce that is dedicated, proficient and proactive.
